Several generations living in and around the Southport, West Lancashire and Formby areas have evocative memories of visiting our club with friends or learning to swim at Victoria. Way back in 1877, local people were having fun, relaxing visits, or learning to swim on the promenade in Southport at the splendid Grade II listed building of the original Victoria Baths. Did your Grandparents, Mum, Dad, siblings or you, visit or learn to swim at Victoria during the last century? Even if it was in the last 40 years as Victoria Leisure, what stands out for you that you can share?
Over 140 years later, the building is still helping hundreds of local children and adults learn to swim every year. The original birdie bath is still being used with its three foot depth and warm temperatures, supported with friendly relaxed instructors, before they gravitate to the main pool as a fully able swimmer. For babies, there is also the learner pool for those very first easy kicks and splashes in the water and surroundings. The Victoria building has seen them all! Victoria Leisure Club would like to create a display of stories, and an online book capturing the memories. Can you share you or your families memories or a story about swimming or visiting Victoria.
